Net WPM is your correct characters divided by five, then divided by the minutes you typed. Raw WPM counts every character, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct, and consistency describes how steady your speed was during the test.
Results and data
Test results, settings and history stay in your browser's local storage. A share link carries the score inside the URL, which means it opens on any device without an account and without a server storing it.
The site counts page views with its own server statistics and runs Google Analytics under a regional consent rule. The privacy page lists exactly what each one stores.

Is the typing test free?
Yes. Every test, word list and guide is free, with no account, no download, no advertising and no paywall.
How is WPM calculated?
Net WPM is correct characters divided by five, then divided by the minutes you typed. One word counts as five characters, including spaces, which is the standard convention used by typing tests.
What is a good typing speed?
For adults typing English, 40 to 60 WPM is the common working range and around 40 WPM is a frequent office baseline. A 2018 study of 136 million keystrokes found an average of roughly 52 WPM in a transcription task. The average typing speed guide explains what changes these numbers.
Does typing faster make me a better typist?
Only if accuracy keeps up. A fast score with uncorrected errors costs more time in real work than a slightly slower, clean result, so accuracy is the first thing to protect.
Are my results saved?
The last 1,000 results are stored in this browser, under keys that begin with clackdash.v1. You can export them as JSON or CSV, and clearing site data removes them. Nothing is uploaded as you type.
Do you use cookies?
The typing test itself sets no cookies, and the site's own statistics count page views without cookies. Google Analytics may set its own cookies only while it is active: after your consent where consent is required first, or by default in other regions, with a control to turn it off.
How do I restart a test?
Press Tab + Enter or Esc to restart with a fresh set of words. Backspace corrects one letter, and Ctrl + Backspace or Alt + Backspace deletes the whole word.
Can I practise punctuation and numbers?
Yes. Both are optional settings, and switching them on makes the test look more like real typing. Expect your score to drop slightly at first.
Which languages are available?
Eight: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Indonesian and Turkish. Each has its own common-word list, and the language menu switches the words without changing anything else.
How do I share a result?
Use the share button on the result screen. The score is encoded in the link itself, so anyone who opens it sees the same numbers without needing an account.
