What a ClackDash test measures
Every run reports words per minute, accuracy, raw speed and consistency. Words per minute counts only correct characters, so a clean, slower run can beat a fast, messy one.
After the timer stops you get a speed chart for the whole test and a heat map of the keys you miss most. Your last 1,000 results stay in this browser and can be exported as JSON or CSV.
How to take the test
- Click the test area and start typing. The timer begins with your first keystroke, not when the page loads.
- Press Tab + Enter or Esc to restart with a fresh set of words.
- Use Backspace to correct one letter, and Ctrl + Backspace or Alt + Backspace to delete a whole word.
- When the test ends, read your accuracy before your speed. Anything below 95 per cent is worth fixing first.
Test modes
Words mode gives you a fixed set of common words: 10, 25, 50 or 100. Time mode races the clock for 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds. Quote mode uses a passage from a public-domain book. Zen mode removes the timer and the score.
Punctuation and numbers can be switched on for a result that looks more like real typing, where capitals, commas and quotation marks all take time.

Speed follows accuracy. Type at a pace you can repeat without mistakes, keep sessions short, and practise the words and keys that show up in your heat map.

Results and settings are stored in your browser under keys that begin with clackdash.v1. Nothing is uploaded as you type, and clearing site data removes the saved history.

How is Words Per Minute (WPM) calculated?
Standard WPM is measured as total characters typed divided by 5, divided by elapsed time in minutes. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors to reflect true typing accuracy.
Is my typing data stored locally or uploaded to servers?
Everything runs strictly inside your local browser sandbox. Your history and personal records stay in your browser localStorage without being sent to external databases.
How do I change the color theme?
Click the theme button in the top menu or on the testbed bar to cycle through 8 distinct colorways, ranging from classic Carbon dark to paper-inspired light modes.
